A brief history of the Evolution of South Station

One of three Amtrak stations serving central Boston, South Station is the northern terminus of the busy Northeast Corridor.

A five-story Neoclassical Revival-style building, South Station in Boston was dedicated on New Year's Eve, 1898. Upon its completion after two years of construction, South Station was the largest railroad station in the world and the largest structure in Boston.

In 1945, South Station made history when more than 46 million passengers, many military personnel returning from war, passed through it.

On Sept. 7, 1962, The Boston Terminal Co. filed for bankruptcy, following in the footsteps of its major stockholder, the New Haven Railroad, thanks to the popularity of the automobile.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority took over ownership in 1965. Its plan for demolition removed six tracks and a large portion of the building’s arched façade, from the corner of Summer Street and Dorchester Avenue to the remaining edge of the terminal that remains today.

Amtrak trains first came to Boston on May Day 1971. Prospects for a major bus terminal within the South Station area were improved when a congressional committee allocated $15 million to finance the project.

Amtrak’s high-speed Acela train allowed faster travel around the country beginning in 1999. Commuters now had an alternative to air travel between Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.

Today, South Station serves as a rail hub for trains from across New England, including MBTA Red Line subway service, Silver Line and other T buses, the commuter rail, and Amtrak.
